Pick up any spec sheet for a "control" racquet aimed at improving players and one number keeps showing up in the 62 to 66 range: the RA, or frame stiffness rating. It has become the shorthand the whole intermediate conversation hangs on. So before you buy your next set of tennis racquets on the promise of "control without punishment," it is worth asking what that single number actually measures — and, more usefully, what it doesn't.
The short version: a mid-flex frame in the low-to-mid 60s RA is a defensible Goldilocks zone for a 3.5–4.0 player, but stiffness is a weak proxy for control on its own. Swingweight and string pattern do more of the work, and RA tells you more about comfort and feel than about where the ball lands.
How we evaluated
We did not swing these frames. This is a synthesis. What we weighed:
- Manufacturer specs, including the stated RA figures, static weight, balance, and string pattern from Wilson, Babolat, Head, and Yonex product pages.
- Independent tester aggregates — the published spec measurements and reviewer consensus from outlets like Tennis Warehouse's University and playtest panels, which measure RA on their own Babolat RDC machines rather than repeating factory numbers.
- Owner feedback across retailer review sections and forum threads, read for repeated patterns rather than one-off opinions.
- The biomechanics literature on frame stiffness, shock, and comfort, so we could separate what RA is a validated proxy for from what it is merely marketed as.
Where those sources disagree — and they do, especially between factory RA and independently measured RA — we say so.
What 62 RA actually measures
RA is a stiffness rating on the Babolat Racquet Diagnostic Center scale. The machine clamps the frame and measures how much the beam deflects under a standardized load. A lower number means the frame flexes more; a higher number means it resists bending. Most modern frames land between roughly 60 (very flexible, players' frames) and 72 (stiff, power/tweener frames).
Two things are worth knowing. First, RA is typically measured unstrung. Stringing a racquet changes the effective stiffness, so the number on the box describes the bare frame, not the thing you actually hit with. Second, independently measured RA often drifts a point or two from the factory figure — Tennis Warehouse's own measurements on their RDC machine regularly differ from manufacturer claims, which is a reminder that even this "objective" number carries a margin of error.
What RA reliably correlates with is feel and shock transmission. A stiffer frame returns more energy to the ball and to your arm; a more flexible frame absorbs and dampens more of the impact. That is a real, measurable mechanical difference, and it is why flex is discussed so heavily in comfort and arm-friendliness conversations.
What 62 RA does not measure
Here is the part the spec-sheet framing obscures: RA is not a control rating. Control — keeping the ball in the court when you swing hard — is governed far more by two other numbers.
The first is swingweight: how heavy the racquet feels in motion, driven by mass distribution, not static weight. A higher swingweight resists twisting on off-center hits and plows through the ball with more stability, which is what most intermediates actually mean when they say a racquet "feels controlled." A flexible frame with a low swingweight can feel unstable; a slightly stiffer frame with a higher swingweight can feel planted.
The second is string pattern. A denser 18x20 pattern deflects the string bed less at contact, producing a lower launch angle and a more predictable, lower-powered response — the mechanism behind the "control" label. A more open 16x19 pattern grabs the ball for more spin but launches higher and demands that your topspin be reliable enough to bring it down. Neither of these shows up in the RA number at all.
So the honest reading is this: a 62 RA frame is not inherently more controllable than a 68 RA frame. It is likely to feel softer and transmit less shock. Whether it controls the ball depends on the swingweight and pattern it is paired with, and on whether your swing is repeatable enough to exploit them.
The comparison

Read across the RA column and the frames look nearly interchangeable — a five-point spread. Read the swingweight and head-size columns and the real differences appear. The consensus in independent playtests is that the Blade and Radical read as the most planted and forgiving of this group, the Pure Strike as the most direct and firm-feeling, and the Yonex 97 as the most demanding because of its slightly smaller head. That ordering tracks swingweight and head size far more cleanly than it tracks RA.
Reading the tradeoffs
If you are the target reader here — swinging with intent but not yet consistent — the practical hierarchy of what to shop for is:
- Head size around 97–100 sq in. Reviewer and owner consensus converges here: 98 is the number that keeps a frame accurate without shrinking the margin for error to pro-level. Below 95 you are buying a discipline you may not have yet.
- Swingweight you can actually swing. The Yonex sits lower, the Blade higher. If your consistency breaks down late in matches, a lower swingweight is easier to keep on line when you are tired.
- A 16x19 pattern for most improving players, unless your strokes are already flat and clean enough that a denser bed would suit you.
- RA last. Treat it as a comfort signal, not a control one. If you have had arm trouble, a lower RA and a softer string are the levers with the most support behind them.
Who this is for — and who it isn't
This framing is for the 3.5–4.0 player who has outgrown a light, oversized beginner frame and is being told to buy "control" without anyone defining it. It is for the player who reads spec sheets and wants to know which numbers are load-bearing.
It is not for the true beginner — a 100+ sq in, lower-swingweight frame will do more good than any of the above. And it is not for the player chasing a specific arm-comfort fix, who should be looking at flex, string type, and tension as a system, not at one frame's RA in isolation.
If we had to reduce it to one line: at 3.5–4.0, buy the swingweight and head size you can control, and read RA as a comfort number, not a control one.
Evidence grade
Moderate. The mechanical definitions of RA, swingweight, and string-pattern behavior are well established, and independent testers measure them consistently. The weak link is the leap from "62 RA" to "more control," which is a marketing simplification the specs themselves do not support. Individual variation is large, and most published tester feedback is qualitative rather than instrumented.
The unsettled question
The place the science is genuinely still open is comfort, not control. Lower-RA frames are widely assumed to protect the arm, but the relationship between frame stiffness, string bed, and actual load at the wrist and elbow is confounded by technique, grip, and how hard a given player swings. Does a softer frame meaningfully lower injury risk for a 4.0 player — or does a player who trusts a softer frame simply swing harder and cancel the benefit out? The honest answer is that we don't yet know, and no spec on the box will tell you.
