  • Independent tester consensus. Tennis Warehouse's multi-tester playtest write-ups, Tennisnerd's oversized frame reviews, and similar independent reviewers who publish their string setups alongside their impressions. Where several testers converge on the same setup complaint or recommendation, we treat that as meaningful; where one tester says it once, we don't.
  • Owner feedback. Retailer review sections and club-player forum threads, read for patterns rather than individual anecdotes — recurring complaints about string movement, durability, or arm discomfort in specific setups.
  • The string-bed physics literature. Principally the work collected by Rod Cross and Crawford Lindsey (Technical Tennis, 2005, and the Tennis Warehouse University material derived from it), which explains why a bigger head changes the stringing math rather than leaving us to guess.

Where these sources disagree, we say so. Where a number is manufacturer-claimed and not independently verified, we say that too.

Why a bigger head changes the stringing math

The physics here is not controversial, and it's worth thirty seconds because it explains almost every recommendation that follows.

In a larger head, each string is longer. Cross and Lindsey's work on string beds establishes that a longer string at the same reference tension produces a softer, more elastic bed — it deflects more under the same load. Full multifilament: the comfort ceiling

For the returning-from-injury player and the pure comfort seeker, a full bed of multifilament (the Wilson NXT / Tecnifibre X-One class of string) is the setup most independent reviewers land on for oversized frames, and it's frequently what testers report using in the playtests themselves. It maximizes exactly what the frame was bought for.

The trade-offs are real and consistently reported: string movement is the worst of any setup here, and the launch angle is the highest, which means the tension has to do the control work. The consensus workaround in tester write-ups is to string toward the upper half of the manufacturer's recommended range — mid-to-upper 50s on a frame that lists 50–60 — rather than the bottom.

Full synthetic gut: the honest budget answer

A solid synthetic gut (the Prince Synthetic Gut / Gosen OG-Sheep Micro class) shows up constantly in owner reviews of oversized frames, partly because it's what shops install by default and partly because it genuinely suits the category. It's firmer than multifilament, so it tames the launch somewhat, and it costs roughly half as much per set. The comfort is a step down from multi but nowhere near poly territory.

For a doubles player restringing two or three times a year who doesn't want to think about it, this is the defensible default, and we'd argue the review consensus supports that reading even when reviewers themselves reach for something fancier.

The hybrid: poly mains, soft crosses — the sleeper pick

This is the setup we came away most persuaded by, and it's the one several independent reviewers of the current Solinco oversized line specifically mention pairing with those frames: a thin, softer polyester in the mains, a multifilament or synthetic gut in the crosses, with the poly strung two to four pounds lower than the crosses.

The logic holds up. The poly mains control the launch angle and largely solve the string-movement complaint — poly's low friction is what lets strings snap back into place. The soft crosses preserve most of the comfort. Owner feedback on hybrids in oversized frames is thinner than for the other setups (fewer people bother), but what exists is notably positive on exactly the two axes that matter: "it stopped sailing" and "my elbow's fine."

The caveat we can't wave away: a hybrid still puts polyester in the frame, and dead poly is dead poly. Which brings us to the setup we're arguing against.

Full polyester: the setup the category exists to escape

Here's where we'll be blunt. Full poly in an oversized frame is, for most of the players who buy oversized frames, a contradiction. The player chose a 107–115 head for comfort and easy depth; stiff polyester subtracts comfort and, past its short playable lifespan, subtracts feel too. The string-bed stiffness that poly adds is precisely the quality the larger head was engineered to reduce.

The literature is unambiguous that polyester loses tension and resilience faster than nylon-based strings — Cross and Lindsey's testing showed poly's tension loss substantially outpacing synthetic gut's from the moment it comes off the machine. A 45-plus recreational player restringing twice a year with full poly is playing on a dead board for most of those months. The owner threads are full of exactly this player wondering why the comfortable frame stopped feeling comfortable.

The exception is narrow but real, and the reviewers name it consistently: a genuinely fast-swinging player who has picked up an oversized frame — say, a strong singles player moving to doubles, or someone managing a wrist rather than an elbow — may need full poly's launch control to keep the ball in the court. The Tennis Warehouse playtests of the more aggressive oversized frames note this repeatedly: with a big swing, soft strings in a big head send the ball long. If that's you, use a softer, thinner poly, string it in the low 50s, and — this is the part nobody enjoys hearing — cut it out on a schedule, not when it breaks.

Tension: the half-true rule of thumb

"String an oversize a few pounds tighter" is the piece of folk wisdom that survives every generation of these frames, and the manufacturer recommended ranges genuinely support it — the printed ranges on oversized frames do sit higher, per the spec sheets, for exactly the string-length reasons above.

But the rule is only half-true, because it assumes the goal is to make the big frame play like a smaller one. For the target buyer of this category, it usually isn't. If the whole point was easy depth and a soft bed, stringing at 60 to strangle the trampoline is buying a frame and then fighting it.

The synthesis across reviewers and owner feedback lands here:

  • Comfort-first players (multi or syn gut): middle of the manufacturer's range. On a 50–60 frame, 54–56. High enough to keep the launch civilized, low enough to keep the bed alive.
  • Hybrid players: poly mains at the bottom of the range or just below, crosses two to four pounds higher.

One thing we could not verify independently and will flag: several manufacturers' comfort claims for their oversized lines cite proprietary stiffness or vibration figures with no published methodology. We've leaned on the RA stiffness numbers that appear on independent retailer spec pages instead, and on tester impressions, and we'd treat any "X% more comfortable" marketing line as unverifiable.

Where the sources genuinely disagree

An honest synthesis owes you the seams.

String movement: some reviewers treat multifilament movement in open oversized patterns as a dealbreaker; owners are split, with plenty saying they simply stopped noticing. We suspect this maps to swing speed — heavier hitters displace strings more — but that's our inference, not a sourced finding.

Natural gut: a minority of reviewers argue that if comfort is the entire point, natural gut hybrids are the true ceiling for this category, and the physics supports the claim. We've left it off the main grid because at three to four times the cost of multifilament per restring, the owner base actually using it in oversized frames is too small to give us a real consensus.

Durability of soft strings in big heads: manufacturer marketing implies the larger sweet zone reduces frame-edge mishits and thus string wear; some owner reviews report the opposite — that longer strings in open patterns notch and break faster. The evidence here is genuinely unclear, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Who this is for — and who it isn't

This advice fits you if: you're a 35-plus doubles regular, a player returning from an arm or shoulder issue, or a newer player who bought (or is eyeing) a 105-plus frame because you'd rather enjoy the sport than white-knuckle it. Multifilament or synthetic gut, middle of the printed tension range, restring when it goes mushy rather than when it breaks. If depth control nags at you, try the poly-main hybrid before you try cranking tension.

It doesn't fit you if: you swing fast and flat and picked up an oversized frame for reach and stability rather than easy power — you're the narrow full-poly exception, and you should string low and cut it out on a calendar. It also doesn't fit if you're in a 98 and happy there; nothing here argues you should move.

Evidence grade

Moderate. The underlying string-bed physics is well established (Cross & Lindsey, 2005), the manufacturer tension ranges are published and consistent, and the independent tester consensus points the same direction. What's missing is systematic head-to-head data — nobody has published controlled comparisons of string setups across oversized frames specifically — so the setup-level recommendations rest on convergent expert opinion and owner patterns rather than measurement. We'd upgrade this to Strong if an independent tester published stiffness and rebound data for the same strings in a 98 versus a 110.

Back to the reader with the shoulder

We wrote back to her, eventually, with a shorter version of all this: skip the poly, put a mid-priced multifilament in at 55, and see how the depth behaves before changing anything else. What stayed with us was how close we'd come to giving her the reflexive answer — the one that would have handed back the comfort she'd just paid for.
