That's the number this tennis racquet review is built around — the RA stiffness rating that sits on nearly every spec sheet, gets thrown around in every forum argument, and quietly drives more purchase decisions among 4.0+ players than any other single figure. A racquet at RA 72 is "a board." A racquet at 62 is "buttery." Somewhere around 65, the internet decides a frame is "modern but arm-friendly," and the marketing departments know it.
Our verdict up front: the RA rating is a real, repeatable measurement that predicts less about how a racquet plays than almost everyone treats it as predicting, and if you're choosing between two frames within three or four RA points of each other, the number is close to useless on its own.
We didn't put a frame on a bench to reach that conclusion — we don't run a lab. What follows is a synthesis of the published specs, the measured databases that exist, and the pattern of agreement (and disagreement) across independent testers and owners. Where a figure has a named source, we cite it. Where it doesn't, we say so.
What the number actually measures
The RA figure comes from the Babolat Racquet Diagnostic Center, the bench machine most manufacturers and big retailers use to standardize specs. The test clamps the handle, applies a load to the shaft, and measures deflection at a single point — the industry convention is roughly 55 cm up the frame. The stiffer the frame, the less it bends, the higher the number. The scale is dimensionless; a typical player's-frame range runs from the high 50s to the low 70s.
That's it. One clamp, one load, one point on the beam. It's a legitimate engineering measurement, and it's repeatable — Tennis Warehouse publishes measured strung specs for the frames it sells, and their measured RA figures generally land within a point or two of manufacturer claims. When Yonex lists the current EZONE 98 at 62 RA and Tennis Warehouse's measured spec comes in near that, we treat the number as reliable. That part of the system works.
The trouble starts when a single-point deflection number gets treated as a full description of how a frame flexes, feels, and treats your elbow.
What the number doesn't measure
Where the frame flexes. Two racquets can post an identical RA while distributing their flex completely differently — one soft in the throat and firm in the hoop, the other the reverse. Tennis Warehouse University has published flex-profile data along the length of frames precisely because the single RDC number hides this, and reviewer consensus tracks the profile better than the headline figure. This is the most common explanation, among testers, for why owners describe two same-RA frames as feeling nothing alike.
Everything the string bed does. The RDC test bends an unstrung frame. On court, the ball spends its dwell time deforming strings far more than graphite. Independent testers consistently report that a full bed of soft multifilament in a 68-RA frame feels more comfortable than stiff polyester in a 62-RA frame — which means a string change can swamp a six-point RA difference the spec sheet says should matter.
The mass behind the stiffness. A stiff, heavy, head-light frame and a stiff, light, head-heavy frame post similar RA numbers and draw opposite reviews. Swingweight and balance determine how much of an impact's energy the frame absorbs versus transmits to your arm; RA says nothing about either.
Unit variance. Manufacturers publish tolerances on weight and balance but rarely on stiffness. Retailers who measure incoming stock — Tennis Warehouse notes this in their measured-spec listings — routinely find frames a point or two off spec. If you're agonizing over 64 versus 66, you may be agonizing over the difference between two units of the same racquet.

On paper, the EZONE sits two points from the Blade and four from the Pure Aero — small gaps. Read the reviews and you'd think these frames came from different sports. Who should care about this number — and who shouldn't
RA is worth your attention if you're comparing frames at the extremes — a 58 versus a 70 is a real, feelable difference the consensus reliably confirms — or if you have a documented arm injury and want to stack every soft-leaning variable in your favor.
It's not worth your attention if you're choosing between frames within a few points of each other, if you haven't decided on strings yet, or if you're using it as a substitute for demoing. The specs-versus-feel gap is real, and every honest reviewer we read says the same thing: the number narrows the list; the demo makes the choice.
Evidence grade: Moderate. The measurement itself is well documented and independently reproduced; the claim that it under-describes on-court feel rests on consistent reviewer and owner consensus plus published flex-profile data, not controlled studies.
The RA rating tells you how much a clamped frame bends at one point on a bench. It does not tell you how a racquet plays. Buy accordingly.
