Nobody doubts that a treadmill counts as exercise. The doubt lives elsewhere: can a sport people play for laughs on Sunday mornings deliver the kind of conditioning that running programs and gym memberships promise? We wanted a straight answer, so we put tennis fitness head-to-head against the two default options — steady-state running and structured gym training — using published research rather than vibes, and scored each on the same five criteria.
We'll say this much up front: the comparison is closer than the skeptics assume, and one result in the longevity literature genuinely surprised us. But we'll let the verdict emerge from the evidence, criterion by criterion, the way it emerged for us.
How we evaluated
We are a review desk, not an exercise physiology lab. We did not strap heart-rate monitors to club players or count calories in a metabolic chamber. What we did was read the published literature and the consensus of people who have measured these things, then weigh the three options against five named criteria:
- Cardiorespiratory load — what heart-rate and oxygen-uptake demands does the activity actually impose, per the studies that measured them?
- Strength and power development — does it build muscle and explosive capacity, or just tax what you have?
- Energy expenditure — calories per hour, using the Compendium of Physical Activities MET values (Ainsworth et al., 2011) rather than fitness-app guesses.
- Adherence and longevity — do people keep doing it, and what does long-term participation correlate with?
- Injury and recovery cost — what does the epidemiology say about what each activity takes out of you?
Where a figure comes from a single study, we say so. Where the evidence is thin or the sources disagree, we say that too.
Cardiorespiratory load: tennis is interval training in disguise
The physiology literature on tennis is more developed than most club players realize. A widely cited review by Fernandez-Fernandez and colleagues (2006, British Journal of Sports Medicine) characterized competitive singles as repeated bouts of high-intensity effort — points averaging under 10 seconds — separated by short recoveries, with players spending sustained stretches at 70–90% of maximum heart rate. That structure is, functionally, interval training: the format that decades of research (including the sprint-interval literature summarized by Gibala and colleagues) suggests is at least as effective as steady-state work for improving VO2 max, often in less total time.
Steady-state running imposes a more continuous load, which is its virtue and its ceiling. A 45-minute easy run holds you in a moderate aerobic zone; it builds base endurance reliably and predictably. Gym training, unless you deliberately program circuits or intervals, typically delivers the least cardiorespiratory stimulus of the three — resistance sessions are dominated by rest between sets.
Score it: running and tennis roughly tied, by different mechanisms; the gym trails unless specifically programmed otherwise.
Strength and power: the gym wins, and it isn't close
Honesty requires a clean concession here. Tennis loads the legs, hips, and core through lunging, rotation, and deceleration — the review literature (Kovacs, 2007, Sports Medicine) documents meaningful lower-body power demands. But tennis cannot do what a barbell does: apply progressive overload in controlled increments. No sport can. If your goal is measurable strength gain — a heavier squat, visible hypertrophy — structured resistance training is the only one of the three with a mechanism designed for it.
Running does even less for strength than tennis; it is the weakest of the three on this criterion by consensus of essentially every strength-and-conditioning source we read.
Score it: gym first by a wide margin, tennis a distant second, running third.
Energy expenditure: closer than the marketing suggests
The Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al., 2011) assigns singles tennis roughly 8.0 METs, doubles around 6.0, running at a 10-minute-mile pace about 9.8, and general resistance training 3.5–6.0 depending on vigor. For a 70 kg adult, that puts an hour of singles in the neighborhood of 550–600 kcal — below a hard hour of running, comfortably above a typical gym session.
Two caveats we'd flag. First, MET values are population averages; a doubles match with long chatty changeovers burns less than the table implies, and a competitive singles match can burn more. Second, none of these numbers make any of the three a standalone weight-management tool — energy intake still dominates that equation, and we'd distrust any source claiming otherwise.
Score it: running first, singles tennis a close second, gym third.

Injury cost: a quieter tennis advantage
Running's overuse-injury rates are well documented — reviews commonly report annual injury incidence among recreational runners that would alarm anyone reading it cold. Tennis is not injury-free (tennis elbow is named for a reason), but a review by Pluim and colleagues (2007, British Journal of Sports Medicine) on health benefits of tennis found the sport's overall injury profile favorable for recreational players, with lower chronic-overuse burden than repetitive-impact endurance sports. The gym, performed with competent technique, carries the lowest acute injury risk of the three.
Adherence: where the verdict actually emerges
Here is the finding that reorganized our thinking. The Copenhagen City Heart Study analysis (Schnohr et al., 2018, Mayo Clinic Proceedings) followed roughly 8,600 adults for up to 25 years and found tennis players gained an estimated 9.7 years of life expectancy versus sedentary peers — the largest gain of any sport examined, ahead of cycling (3.7 years) and gym activities (1.5 years). The authors were careful, and so are we: this is observational data, tennis players in Copenhagen skew affluent and socially connected, and the study cannot prove the racquet caused the years. The authors themselves hypothesized that the social component of racquet sports may drive part of the effect.
But that hypothesis is exactly the point for a fitness-curious adult. The best-designed program is worth nothing abandoned in February. Tennis's conditioning stimulus arrives wrapped in a game with opponents, partners, rivalries, and standing weekly matches — social scaffolding that running logs and gym apps try, with mixed success, to simulate. The physiological load is real, per the interval literature. The reason you'll still be absorbing that load in five years is the other person across the net.
Who this is for — and who it isn't
Tennis is the right primary conditioning choice if you're an adult who has quit a gym membership or a running plan before, who wants genuinely hard cardiovascular work, and who accepts moderate skill investment as the entry fee. It rewards intermediate and advancing players especially: as your level rises, so does the intensity, which is a progression model most casual exercise lacks.
It is the wrong sole choice if your goal is maximal strength or muscle gain (lift), if you need precisely dosed training for an endurance event (run), or if you can't reliably access courts and partners — a real logistical tax the treadmill never charges. The strongest programs we saw recommended in the coaching and sports-medicine literature pair court time with two short resistance sessions weekly, which also addresses tennis's asymmetric loading.
The screenshot verdict: for a general-fitness adult who values conditioning they'll still be doing in five years, tennis beats both steady-state running and the gym — not on any single physiological metric, but on the combination of interval-quality cardio and the best adherence evidence in the literature.
Evidence grade: Moderate. The cardiovascular demands of tennis are well documented in peer-reviewed work; the longevity advantage rests heavily on one large observational cohort and should be read as a strong signal, not settled causation.
