Somewhere in the last decade, "tennis adds years to your life" hardened from a research finding into a piece of folk wisdom. Fitness-curious adults now arrive at the sport already half-convinced — and half-suspicious, because a game people play for pleasure rarely gets credit as serious conditioning. Both instincts deserve a fair hearing. So we traced the tennis fitness claim back to its sources, read what independent researchers and skeptics have said about them, and weighed how much of the belief the evidence actually carries.
The short version: tennis is legitimately good conditioning — an interval workout disguised as a game — but the most famous claim made on its behalf, the longevity headline, rests on thinner evidence than the confidence with which it gets repeated. Play tennis because the physiology and the adherence data favor it, not because a Danish cohort study promised you a decade.
How we evaluated
We did not run a lab and we did not log heart-rate data on a court. What follows is a synthesis, and we want to be plain about how it was built:
- Peer-reviewed research, principally the Copenhagen City Heart Study analyses (Schnohr and colleagues, 2018, in Mayo Clinic Proceedings) and the earlier consensus review on tennis and health by Pluim and colleagues (2007, British Journal of Sports Medicine).
- Governing-body and manufacturer-adjacent claims — the USTA, the ITF, and club-industry marketing — treated as claims to be checked, not evidence.
- Independent commentary, including epidemiologists who publicly critiqued the longevity findings when they circulated in the press.
Where a number comes from a single observational study, we say so. Where sources disagree, we show the disagreement rather than average it away.
Where the belief came from
Every widely held fitness belief has an origin story, and the tennis one is unusually traceable.
The modern version starts with the Copenhagen City Heart Study, a long-running Danish cohort that has followed thousands of adults since the 1970s. In 2018, Schnohr and colleagues published an analysis in Mayo Clinic Proceedings comparing life expectancy across leisure sports. The headline figure: tennis players in the cohort lived, on average, 9.7 years longer than sedentary participants — ahead of badminton (6.2 years), soccer (4.7), cycling (3.7), and jogging (3.2).
That number escaped the paper almost immediately. It ran in the New York Times, was repeated by the USTA, and now appears — usually stripped of its provenance — in nearly every "is tennis a good workout" article on the internet. The claim had a second tailwind: a 2016 analysis of British cohorts by Oja and colleagues in the British Journal of Sports Medicine had already found racquet sports associated with a 47 percent reduction in all-cause mortality, the largest of any activity category studied. Two independent datasets, same direction. The belief set like concrete.
Before all that, the sport's health case rested on a 2007 consensus review by Pluim and colleagues, also in BJSM, which concluded that regular tennis players showed better aerobic fitness, lower body fat, and more favorable lipid profiles than sedentary controls — solid, unglamorous findings that never made headlines.
The source is thinner than the belief
Here is where honest synthesis has to slow down.
The Copenhagen findings are observational. Nobody randomized adults to tennis versus jogging for twenty-five years. Tennis players in Denmark during the study period skewed wealthier and more educated than the general cohort — both strong independent predictors of longevity. The authors adjusted for education and income, but adjustment is not immunity, and the study's own authors flagged residual confounding as a limitation. When the paper circulated, several epidemiologists made the same point publicly: the tennis-versus-jogging gap may say as much about who plays tennis as about what tennis does.
There is also the sociability hypothesis, which the Schnohr paper itself raised: the sports at the top of the longevity table (tennis, badminton, soccer) are social; the ones lower down (jogging, gym work) are typically solitary. Social connection is independently associated with longevity, so tennis may be borrowing some of its glow from the company it keeps. That is not a knock on the sport — the social pull is arguably its best adherence feature — but it means "tennis adds 9.7 years" is not a claim about forehands.
What survives scrutiny is more modest and more useful. The 2007 Pluim review and subsequent work support the mechanism-level case: a singles match is functionally interval training — repeated bursts of sprinting, lunging, and rotational work separated by short recovery, sustained for an hour or more. Manufacturer-independent estimates compiled in the Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al., 2011) put singles tennis at roughly 7 to 8 METs, in the same band as running about a 10-minute mile — with the difference that most recreational players will happily do it for 90 minutes, which few recreational runners will say about a tempo run.
Tennis against the alternatives
For a fitness-curious adult choosing where to spend three hours a week, here is how the sourced evidence stacks up:

Two honest caveats. First, the mortality percentages are associations from observational cohorts, not effects you can bank. Second, tennis is not a complete program: the Pluim review notes the sport's asymmetric demands, and the consensus among coaches and physiotherapists we read is that regular players still need supplementary strength work — particularly posterior shoulder and hip — to stay durable. Anyone selling tennis as the only exercise you'll ever need is selling.
Who this is for — and who it isn't
Tennis fitness makes the most sense if you are an adult who has failed to stick with solitary exercise, because the game hides the intervals inside competition and the calendar inside other people's expectations. The adherence case is, in our reading, stronger than the physiology case — and the physiology case is decent.
It is a worse fit if you need precisely dosed training (the intensity of a match depends on your opponent, not your plan), if you have joint issues that rule out multidirectional impact, or if you want measurable week-over-week progression. A cyclist with a power meter knows exactly what they did; a tennis player knows they won 6-4.
The verdict
Tennis is a genuinely good conditioning choice — an interval workout with a built-in retention mechanism — but the famous longevity numbers are observational associations, not promises, and should be quoted with their caveats attached.
Evidence grade: Moderate. The claim that regular tennis meaningfully improves aerobic fitness and body composition is well supported (Pluim 2007 and successors). The claim that tennis specifically extends life by nearly a decade rests on cohort associations with plausible confounding, publicly acknowledged by the studies' own authors. Strong enough to justify playing; too weak to justify the folk version. Reviewer note: I play twice a week, and I stopped citing the 9.7-years figure to friends about a year ago, somewhere in the middle of rereading the Schnohr paper's limitations section. What I say now is smaller and truer: it's the only interval session I've never once had to talk myself into, because someone is standing on the other side of the net waiting. That, as far as I can tell, is the finding that holds.
