How we evaluated

Four kinds of evidence went into this, and they don't all deserve equal trust.

  • Manufacturer specs — gauge, composition, claimed benefits. Useful for what's in the string; close to useless for how it plays, since every company calls its string "control with comfort."

  • Independent tester reviews — the multi-reviewer playtests from outlets like Tennis Warehouse and String Lab, where several hitters score the same string and the scores get averaged. Consensus across a review panel is worth more than any single verdict.
  • Owner feedback — the volume reviews and forum threads. Noisy, but when hundreds of stringers independently say a poly "died in a week," that pattern means something.

The honest limit: string feel is subjective, tension-loss numbers depend heavily on gauge and reference tension, and the DT figures below are point-in-time measurements, not a fatigue curve over eleven days of play. Where sources disagree, we say so.

The comparison

All figures are for the reference gauge noted. Stiffness is dynamic stiffness (DT) where a published figure exists; higher means firmer. Tension-loss notes summarize tester and owner consensus, not a single lab reading.

Read the stiffness column as relative, not absolute — the reviewer panels rank ALU Power and 4G among the firmer polyesters, and Poly Tour Pro, Hyper-G, and Lynx Tour lower on the stiffness scale in that same body of testing.

If your problem is tension loss: Luxilon 4G

The counterintuitive answer to "what holds tension better than ALU Power" is a string from the same shelf. Luxilon markets 4G on tension maintenance specifically, and the tester consensus backs the claim more than most marketing does — 4G routinely rates at or near the top of polyester tension-retention rankings in multi-reviewer playtests. The trade-off is candid: 4G is stiffer and more muted than ALU Power. Reviewers who love ALU's lively, crisp pocketing tend to find 4G a little dead by comparison. If what you valued in ALU was the control and you're willing to trade some liveliness to stop restringing every week, 4G is the direct swap. If what you valued was the feel, keep reading.

If your problem is comfort: Yonex Poly Tour Pro or Head Lynx Tour

The stiffness complaint is the one where leaving Luxilon makes sense. In the published stiffness rankings, both Yonex Poly Tour Pro and Head Lynx Tour sit softer than ALU Power, and the tester and owner consensus consistently describes them as more arm-friendly. Poly Tour Pro is the one we see recommended most often for players who like poly's control but whose elbow or wrist has started complaining — reviewers describe it as smooth and comfortable, at the cost of some of the crisp bite ALU Power gives. Lynx Tour lands slightly firmer than Poly Tour Pro but earns strong comfort scores in review panels while holding a cleaner, more controlled response. Neither will feel as connected as ALU at fresh tension; both will feel better in week two.

If your problem is spin and power: Solinco Hyper-G

Hyper-G is the enthusiast's default for a reason. The reviewer consensus puts it softer than ALU Power with a reputation for heavy spin and a comfortable, forgiving pocket, and its tension retention rates better than ALU's in the same playtests, even if it's a notch below 4G. It's also less expensive than Luxilon, which matters when you restring often. The honest caveat: some testers find its feel a touch mushy compared to ALU's precision, and the shaped profile can saw through itself faster. For a player who wants poly control plus a bigger, spinnier, more forgiving window, it's the most-recommended crossover option we found.

Who this is for — and who should stay put

This is for the 3.5–5.0 player restringing every ten to fourteen days who is tired of a stringbed that plays great for four sessions and dead for the next four, or whose arm has started to protest. For that player, any of the four alternatives above is a reasonable, low-risk experiment.

It is not for you if ALU Power is actually working. If you restring on a schedule tight enough that you never feel the dead phase — many stronger players cut out at the first sign of tension drop — then you're using ALU the way the tour does, and its liveliness is hard to replace. Chasing an alternative there just trades a feel you like for a problem you don't have. And if you're a chronic string-breaker, note that softer polys like Hyper-G and Poly Tour Pro generally won't last longer than ALU; comfort and durability usually pull in opposite directions.

Evidence grade for the central claim — that better-retaining and softer alternatives to ALU Power exist at comparable control: Moderate. The stiffness and tension-retention rankings are backed by consistent independent lab and multi-reviewer data; the feel judgments rest on tester and owner consensus, which is real but subjective.

We wrote back to the coach with 4G for the client who wanted the same control and Poly Tour Pro for a different client whose elbow had been flaring. That's the shape of the answer: the fix depends on which complaint is louder.

The myth is that ALU Power is the ceiling, and everything else is a step down from the tour standard. The more accurate version is that ALU Power is one point on a map — excellent when it's fresh and restrung often, and easy to improve on the moment tension loss or stiffness is the thing standing between you and a better week.
